It was a rough third quarter for United Airlines.

Travelers stayed away, frustrated by technology glitches from United's merger with Continental. And a huge accounting charge wiped out most of its profit.

United's performance weakened by every measure important to airlines: Per-passenger revenue fell 2.6 percent, and was down in every part of the world except for the Pacific. Traffic decreased 1.5 percent. Yield, which measures fares paid, slipped 1.2 percent.

Net income for United Continental Holdings Inc. dropped to $6 million, or 2 cents per share, from $653 million, or $1.69 per share, a year earlier.

Its most recent profit would have been bigger if not for a special charge for a preliminary agreement with its pilots. But excluding that charge, its profit of $1.35 per share was still 12 cents less than analysts expected, according to FactSet.

Revenue fell 2.6 percent to $9.91 billion, also below analyst expectations.

By comparison, Delta's passenger revenue rose 1 percent during the most recent quarter, and yield rose 3 percent. The rival airline posted a $1.05 billion profit, with an assist from bets on fuel prices.

United planned ahead for some of the traffic reduction by reducing flying capacity 1.4 percent. Airlines have been increasingly aggressive about cutting capacity to keep the number of seats they offer in line with demand, so they can keep fares higher.

United booked a $454 million charge to cover future lump-sum payments to pilots. United also recorded $60 million in integration expenses for merging the two airlines. That money covered repainting planes, merging computer systems, and charges for getting rid of facilities that the combined airline no longer needs.

Shares of the Chicago-based airline fell 77 cents, or 3.8 percent, to $19.50 in midday trading.

Extensive security arrangements being made for Eid - Pakistan Today

KARACHI?-?IG Sindh Police Fayyaz Leghari on Thursday said that the Sindh police will put in place an elaborated security plan during upcoming Eid-ul-Azha to effectively deal with any law and order situation.

Talking to media persons outside the Supreme Court, Karachi Registery, Leghari said that around 20,000 police force will be deployed during Eid-ul-Azha across the city. Deployment will be made in sensitive areas and mosques for Eid prayers.

He said that different political parties and groups have agreed upon a code of conduct for collection of hides of sacrificial animals.

Leghari denied reports that animals have been shot in old city area for collection of extortion money.

Obama backs gay marriage measures in 3 states

President Barack Obama on Thursday threw his support behind ballot measures in Maine, Maryland and Washington state that would legalize same-sex marriage.

Though the president first voiced his general approval for gay marriage in May, he had not previously offered specific endorsements of the three measures.

In each case, the endorsements were issued through the state branches of Obama's re-election campaign.

"While the president does not weigh in on every single ballot measure in every state, the president believes in treating everyone fairly and equally, with dignity and respect," said Paul Bell, the campaign's press secretary in Washington state.

"Washington's same-sex marriage law would treat all Washington couples equally, and that is why the president supports a vote to approve Referendum 74," Bell said.

In Maine, gay-rights supporters put the measure on this year's ballot in hopes of reversing the results of a 2009 referendum in which voters rejected a same-sex marriage law passed by the legislature.

In Maryland and Washington, gay-marriage laws were passed by lawmakers and signed by the governors earlier this year, but opponents collected enough signatures to hold referendums on whether the laws should be upheld or rejected.

Ed Murray, an openly gay state senator in Washington who has been fighting for years to legalize gay marriage, expressed gratitude to Obama.

"When I first began fighting in the legislature for marriage equality ... I would never have dared to dream that a president of the United States would one day step forward at this crucial moment, in the middle of his own close re-election campaign, to offer his support for our efforts," Murray said. "But that is exactly what President Obama done, and it is an example of his courage and leadership."

Murray said his hope was to soon be able to wed his partner of 21 years, and he thanked Obama for "bringing that dream a little closer to reality."

Chip White of Preserve Marriage Washington, which opposes the gay-marriage law, said he was unsurprised by Obama's action.

"Until May of this year, the president's position was that marriage is the union of one man and one woman," White said. "No one called him a bigot or said he was unfair for holding that position. And Washingtonians who believe in the traditional definition of marriage as one man and one woman are not bigots."

If any of the measures are approved, it would be the first time that a state legalized same-sex marriage through a popular vote. Thus far, all 32 states voting on gay marriage have rebuffed it, while the six states that have legalized it did so through legislation or court orders.

In all three states voting on the issue on Nov. 6, the outcome is expected to be close, though the polls up to now have given an edge to gay-marriage supporters.

Hybrid of Sandy, winter storm eyes East Coast

HAVANA?? Hurricane Sandy, strengthening rapidly after crossing the warm Caribbean Sea, slammed into southeastern Cuba early on Thursday with 110 mph winds that cut power and blew over trees across the city of Santiago de Cuba.

The storm has a 70 percent chance of smacking the Northeast and mid-Atlantic next week, with gale-force winds, flooding, heavy rain and maybe even snow, government scientists said Wednesday.

Forecasters said the storm slated to hit the country's most populous corridor will be an unusual hybrid of hurricane and winter storm ? an early winter storm in the West and a blast of arctic air from the North are predicted to collide.

The eye of the Category 2 storm came ashore just west of Santiago de Cuba, 470 miles southeast of the capital Havana, with waves up to 29 feet and a six-foot storm surge that caused extensive coastal flooding, Jose Rubiera of the Cuban weather service said in a television report.

Rubiera held the phone up to a window so viewers could hear Sandy's roaring winds that he said had left the city "completely dark" and created a "very tense" situation.

Heavy rains were falling throughout the storm-stricken region, with forecasters predicting six to 12 inches for most areas and as much as 20 inches in isolated places.

Rubiera said Sandy had intensified rapidly as it neared land fueled by 88-degree waters on its way from Jamaica, struck earlier in the day by the storm when it was still at Category 1 on the five-step Saffir-Simpson hurricane intensity scale.

A Category 2 storm has winds between 96 and 110 mph, leaving Sandy within a whisker of becoming a Category 3 hurricane.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami reported gusts up to 114 mph, but Rubiera said a weather station on the Gran Piedra, a mountainous outcropping near Santiago de Cuba, had a gusts up to 152 mph.

At least 55,000 people had been evacuated ahead of Sandy, Cuban officials said, principally because of expected flooding.

Billion-dollar storm?
"It'll be a rough couple days from Hatteras up to Cape Cod," said forecaster Jim Cisco of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration prediction center in College Park, Md. "We don't have many modern precedents for what the models are suggesting."

It is likely to hit during a full moon when tides are near their highest, increasing coastal flooding potential, NOAA forecasts warn. And with some trees still leafy and the potential for snow, power outages could last to Election Day, some meteorologists fear. They say it has all the earmarks of a billion-dollar storm.

Some have compared it to the so-called Perfect Storm that struck off the coast of New England in 1991, but Cisco said that one didn't hit as populated an area and is not comparable to what the East Coast may be facing. Nor is it like last year's Halloween storm, which was merely an early snowstorm in the Northeast.

This has much more mess potential because it is a combination of different storm types that could produce a real whopper of weather problems, meteorologists say.

"The Perfect Storm only did $200 million of damage and I'm thinking a billion," said Jeff Masters, meteorology director of the private service Weather Underground. "Yeah, it will be worse."

But this is several days in advance, when weather forecasts are far less accurate. The National Hurricane Center only predicts five days in advance, and on Wednesday their forecasts had what's left of Sandy off the North Carolina coast on Monday. But the hurricane center's chief hurricane specialist, James Franklin, said the threat keeps increasing for "a major impact in the Northeast, New York area. In fact it would be such a big storm that it would affect all of the Northeast."

The forecasts keep getting gloomier and more convincing with every day, several experts said.

Cisco said the chance of the storm smacking the East jumped from 60 percent to 70 percent on Wednesday. Masters was somewhat skeptical on Tuesday, giving the storm scenario just a 40 percent likelihood, but on Wednesday he also upped that to 70 percent. The remaining computer models that previously hadn't shown the merger and mega-storm formation now predict a similar scenario.

The biggest question mark is snow, and that depends on where the remnants of Sandy turn inland. The computer model that has been leading the pack in predicting the hybrid storm has it hitting around Delaware. But another model has the storm hitting closer to Maine. If it hits Delaware, the chances of snow increase in that region. If it hits farther north, chances for snow in the mid-Atlantic and even up to New York are lessened, Masters said.

NOAA's Cisco said he could see the equivalent of several inches of snow or rain in the mid-Atlantic, depending on where the storm ends up. In the mountains, snow may be measured in feet instead of inches.

On the other hand, I can't help but ask why the ability to layer and brush on effects and all the other iPad-exclusive features were never, and still aren't, available on the iPhone version of Camera+.

Regardless, editing photos is always a much more pleasant experience on the iPad than on the iPhone, and for just a buck, Camera+ for iPad is a great choice -- especially if you're already a Camera+ for iPhone user.

Ugandan army seizes base of Lord's Resistance Army

BANGUI, Central African Republic (AP) ? The Ugandan army destroyed a base of a key general of the Lord's Resistance Army in the Central African Republic.

Ugandan Army Colonel Milton Katarinyebwa said this week that it captured the headquarters of LRA General Dominic Ongwen, one of four Ugandan rebels wanted by the International Criminal Court.

The colonel denied reports that Ongwen was killed and said Ugandan forces will track him down.

The base was seized on August 24 in the Haut Mbomou area of southeastern Central African Republic.

Since December 2011, 300 members of the United States military have advised Ugandan and Central African Republic troops on how to fight Joseph Kony and other LRA members.

Since 2005, Ongwen has been wanted by the international court for three counts of crimes against humanity.

China's August factory PMI hits 9-month low

The official PMI dipped below 50, which demarcates expansion from contraction, for the first time since November 2011, in the latest sign that the world's second-biggest economy is struggling against global headwinds.

BEIJING: China's official factory purchasing managers' index fell to a lower-than-expected 49.2 in August from 50.1 in July, official data showed on Saturday, in a result that is likely to strengthen the case for further policy steps to bolster growth.

Economists polled by Reuters this week had expected the August official PMI to slip to 50.

China cut interest rates in June and July and has been injecting cash into money markets to ease credit conditions to support the economy that notched a sixth straight quarter of slower growth in the April-June period.

But analysts are divided over whether that will be enough to stop the slowdown extending to a seventh quarter.

The PMI's output sub-index eased to 50.9 in August from July's 51.8, the National Bureau of Statistics said.

A flash PMI published last week by HSBC plunged to a nine-month low of 47.8 in August, as new export orders slumped and inventories rose, a signal that a persistent slowdown in economic growth has extended deeper into the third quarter. .

According to the latest Reuters poll, China's annual economic growth could pick up to 7.9 percent in the third quarter from a three-year low of 7.6 percent in the second quarter in response to government policy fine-tuning.

A raft of weaker-than-expected July data had cooled market expectations for any quick economic recovery, especially as the central bank sticks to its "prudent" policy stance for fear of reigniting property and inflation risks.

Still, analysts believe the central bank will continue to loosen policy further by cutting interest rates and banks' reserve requirement ratio in coming months to support growth.

The HSBC PMI has been below 50 for 10 straight months, reinforcing calls from analysts and investors for further measures from Beijing to support economic growth.

The official PMI generally paints a rosier picture of the factory sector than the HSBC PMI as the official survey focuses on big, state-owned firms, while the HSBC PMI targets smaller, private firms that have limited access to bank loans.

There are also differing approaches to seasonal adjustment in the surveys.

The final HSBC reading will be published on September 3, as will the National Bureau of Statistics' services PMI.

Jupiter-Bound Probe Changes Orbit in Deep Space

NASA's Jupiter-bound Juno probe fired its main engine Thursday (Aug. 30) to help set up a speed-boosting flyby of Earth next year.

The engine burn ? which took place when the Juno spacecraft was about 300 million miles (483 million kilometers) from Earth ? began at 6:57 p.m. EDT (2257 GMT) Thursday and lasted nearly 30 minutes. It appears to have worked according to plan, changing the probe's velocity by about 770 mph (1,240 kph), researchers said.

"This first and successful main engine burn is the payoff for a lot of hard work and planning by the operations team," Juno project manager Rick Nybakken, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., said in a statement.

"We started detailed preparations for this maneuver earlier this year, and over the last five months we've been characterizing and configuring the spacecraft, primarily in the propulsion and thermal systems," he added. [Video: A Look at Juno's Mission]

After another burn this Tuesday (Sept. 4), Juno should be on course for its Earth flyby on Oct. 9, 2013, which will bring the probe within 310 miles (500 km) of our planet. Earth's gravity will give the spacecraft a big push, boosting its velocity by 16,330 mph (26,280 kph) and placing Juno on its final path to Jupiter, researchers said.

Juno, which launched on Aug. 5, 2011, is slated to arrive at the solar system's largest planet on July 4, 2016.

Once there, Juno will orbit Jupiter 33 times from pole to pole, using its eight science instruments to peer beneath the gas giant's thick clouds. (The spacecraft takes its name from the goddess Juno, who was able to see through the clouds devised by her husband Jupiter in an attempt to hide his mischief.)

The main goal of the $1.1 billion mission is to learn about Jupiter's atmosphere, magnetosphere, composition and origins, and to determine if the planet has a solid core, researchers said.

"We need to go to Jupiter to learn our history because Jupiter is the largest of the planets, and it formed by grabbing most of the material left over from the sun's formation," said Juno principal investigator Scott Bolton, of the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio. "Earth and the other planets are really made from the leftovers of the leftovers, so if we want to learn about the history of the elements that made Earth and life, we need to first understand what happened when Jupiter formed."

Juno will put another 1.4 billion miles (2.25 billion km) on its odometer by the time it reaches Jupiter, Bolton said. The probe is making its long journey powered by the sun ? the first time a solar-powered craft has ever traveled as far out as Jupiter.

The 8,000-pound (3,267 kg) spacecraft boasts three different solar arrays, each as big as a tractor-trailer. The arrays' 18,698 solar cells will generate about 400 watts of power out at Jupiter ? the equivalent of four 100-watt light bulbs.

Health officials probe virus exposure at Yosemite

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ? Two more Yosemite National Park visitors have been found with a mouse-borne virus blamed for the deaths of two people, bringing the total number of infections to six, state health officials said.

The new discoveries were made during the agency's investigation into cases of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome at the famed park, California Department of Public Health Anita Gore spokeswoman said.

The infections spurred park officials to close 91 tent cabins at Curry Village in Yosemite Valley, where five of the six infections occurred. Gore said one of the infected people may have been in another area of the park.

"Our investigation is trying to determine which area of the park that person visited," she said.

Over the past three weeks, two people have died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome after staying in cabins at Curry Village in Yosemite Valley.

Park officials said the double-walled design of the cabins that were closed Tuesday made it easy for mice to nest between the walls. The disease is carried in the feces, urine and saliva of deer mice and other rodents.

The illness begins as flu-like symptoms but can quickly affect the lungs. It can take up to six weeks to incubate.

Five of the people who fell ill are known to have stayed in the tent cabins in June or July, and warnings have gone out to visitors who stayed in Curry Village in June, July or August.

The hantavirus outbreak occurred despite efforts by park officials to step up protection efforts last April. A 2010 report from the state health department warned park officials that rodent inspection efforts should be increased after a visitor to the Tuolumne Meadows area of the park fell ill.

The new hantavirus policy, enacted April 25, was designed to provide a safe place, "free from recognized hazards that may cause serious physical harm or death."

It came after the state report revealed that 18 percent of mice trapped for testing at various locations around the park were positive for hantavirus.

"Inspections for rodent infestations and appropriate exclusion efforts, particularly for buildings where people sleep, should be enhanced," it said.

In 2009, the park installed the 91 new, higher-end cabins to replace some that had been closed or damaged after parts of Curry Village, which sits below the 3,000-foot Glacier Point promontory, were determined to be in a rock-fall hazard zone.

The new cabins have canvas exteriors and drywall or plywood inside, with insulation in between. Park officials found this week when they tried to shore up some of the cabins that mice had built nests in the walls.

The deer mice most prone to carrying the virus can squeeze through holes just one-quarter-inch in diameter. They are distinguished from solid-colored house mice by their white bellies and gray and brown bodies.

The park sent warning emails and letters Wednesday to another 1,000 people who stayed in tent cabins, after officials found that a computer glitch had stopped the notices from going out with the original 1,700 warnings Monday. The warning says anyone with flu-like symptoms or respiratory problems should seek immediate medical attention.

In 2011, half of the 24 U.S. hantavirus cases ended in death. But since 1993, when the virus first was identified, the average death rate is 36.39 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

140 missing, 6 rescued as boat sinks off Indonesia

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) ? Rescuers were searching for scores of asylum seekers Thursday, a day after their boat sank off the Indonesian coast. Six people were rescued, but more than 140 remained missing.

The emergency was the latest in a series created by a growing human smuggling trade in which thousands of would-be refugees from countries including Afghanistan, Iran and Sri Lanka travel from Indonesia to Australia in overcrowded fishing boats.

More than 90 died when two boats sank within a week in June and more than 300 have lost their lives making the perilous journey across the Sunda Strait between Indonesia and the Australian territory of Christmas Island since last December.

In the latest incident, a boat reportedly carrying 150 asylum seekers sank off the main Indonesian island of Java on Wednesday.

The crew of a merchant ship taking part in the search, Liberian-flagged APL Bahrain, spotted survivors in the water early Thursday 75 kilometers (45 miles) southwest of Java and rescued six, Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said.

"There are grave fears for a lot more," Clare told reporters.

The Bahrain's captain, Manuel Nistorescu, told the Fairfax Media website that he also saw what he believed were bodies in the water.

"I think I saw some of them dead," he said.

Nistorescu said the six rescued, all Afghan men, had been in the water for almost 24 hours. There were also women and children aboard the asylum-seeker boat when it sank, he said. The rescued men appeared to be in good condition and were given overalls from the ship to wear, he said.

Nistorescu said he was about to abandon the search when he heard whistles and yelling from the dark water.

Australian Maritime Safety Authority spokeswoman Jo Meehan said another four merchant ships and an Australian military aircraft had joined the search and rescue operation.

Two Indonesian government ships, an Australian navy patrol boat and two planes from Australia were to join the search later Thursday, she said.

Australian authorities received a call by satellite phone from someone aboard the missing boat early Wednesday requesting help. The person said there were 150 people aboard and the vessel had engine trouble. The boat was then 15 kilometers (9 miles) off Java, officials said.

Indonesian authorities launched a search with two boats and a helicopter but found no trace of the boat by late Wednesday.

Meehan said Australia had offered ships and aircraft to help the Indonesians search Wednesday, but that the offer was not taken up.

The survivors were spotted after Australian authorities expanded the search area based on drift patterns.

Clare, who is the minister responsible for Australian rescue authorities, said Indonesia should not be criticized for failing to find survivors on Wednesday.

"It is very hard to find people that are in distress on a little wooden boat in the middle of the Sunda Strait," he said.

Richard Marles, Australia's junior foreign minister, said the emergency highlighted the need for Australia to urgently establish detention camps in the Pacific island states of Papua New Guinea and Nauru to hold asylum seekers who reach Australia by boat.

The government hopes to send the first asylum seekers to a tent camp on Nauru in September in a strategy to deter others from attempting the same boat journey.

"We are confident that when that happens, we will see a reduction in the number of people making the journey," Marles said.

Clare said people smugglers were rushing to get asylum seekers on boats headed for Australia before the off-shore detention camps were opened.

"People smugglers are running a closing down sale," he said.
