I think this has happened to everyone who owns a computer and has been on the internet for extended periods of time. You go online, do whatever in the world you?re doing online (it?s really none of our business what you?re doing), close your internet browser when you?re done and low and behold you have a spam clip on your desk top. It?s usually something you don?t care about and you exit out of it fast enough, but do you ever ask yourself why it was there in the first place? Was it just a freak occurrence, or was it a cleaver rues planed out by a marketing firm to increase their web marketing advertisements?
To answer this we must first try to figure out what spam really is, and no I?m not talking about the canned ham that?s standard in Hawaii. Internet spam is the use of electronic messaging systems (including most broadcast media, digital delivery systems) to send unsolicited mass messages indiscriminately. While the most forms of spam is recognized as e-mail spam, the term is applied to similar crimes in other media: instant messaging spam, Usenet newsgroup spam, Web search engine spam, spam in blogs, wiki spam, online classified ads spam, mobile phone messaging spam, Internet forum spam, junk fax transmissions, social networking spam, television advertising and file sharing network spam. Wow, who knew there were so many different types of spam out there?
However, spam as a type of web marketing wasn?t used until 1994 when a husband and wife lawyer team used the spam superhighway to promote their law firm. Up until that point spam was attributed to chain letters and nerd pranks. However, since that day spam has been a widespread phenomenon because it is generally cheap to produce, and is used by a number of Internet marketing companies.
The last one I personally got, before I updated my spam blocker, was one from Net Flicks advertising some sort of coupon. But spam is generally a bad thing, because of how easy it is to create and how inexpensive it is. It has been used by people to infect your computer with viruses, used to conduct fraud and various other uses that are not for positive web marketing.
Generally the use of spam as a marketing tactic, though cost efficient, is frowned upon by larger web companies and will greatly hinder your company?s web reputation. Now, spam marketing is mostly used by the more shady businesses like people who want to sell you pornography, give your computer viruses, or try to steal your identity. It?s for these reasons that computers and email accounts now have spam blockers to try and protect you from these undesirable web marketing ploys. So even though a piece of spam mail may pop up on your computer and looks like it?s from a trustworthy source, delete it immediately. Like the old saying goes ?never trust a Greek bearing gifts? or you may fall prey to your own cyber Trojan horse.
