  • LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Holy Cross baseball team jumped out to early leads in both ends of a Patriot League doubleheader Sunday at Depew Field and ended up winning both games over Bucknell. The Crusaders led 5-0 after four innings in game one and won the seven-inning affair 5-1. Holy Cross led 6-0 after two innings in game two and held off a late Bison rally for an 11-7 victory in a game two that was twice interrupted by rain and lightning.

Bucknell (13-14, 1-3 PL), which split a doubleheader with Holy Cross (14-11, 3-1 PL) Saturday, pounded out 14 hits in the game two loss, its most since a 15-hit performance vs. Northwestern on March 17. The Bison loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate in No. 3 hitter David Duffett, but he was retired on a pop out to the shortstop just in front of the second base bag to end the game.

The second game of Sunday's twinbill featured a pair of delays as the contest was stopped for 29 minutes in the bottom of the fourth inning and for 30 more minutes in the bottom of the fifth.

The Holy Cross offense was hot in game two as the Crusaders touched four Bucknell pitchers for 18 hits. The two through seven hitters in the lineup - Alex Maldanado, Patrick Puentes, Jordan Enos, Chris Sintetos, Steven Tkowski and Brandon Cipolla - each posted a multi-hit outing and combined to go 14-for-30 with nine RBIs and eight runs scored. Those six hitters combined to reach base in each of their first 10 plate appearances in the first two innings, helping the Crusaders to their early 6-0 advantage. Holy Cross plated four runs in the first inning and two more in the second.

Bucknell trimmed its deficit to 6-3 with two runs in the third on a Travis Clark double and one more in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk by Duffett.

However, Holy Cross sent eight hitters to the plate in the fifth and scored three runs to extend its advantage back out to 9-3.

A two-run double by reserve outfielder Colby Vanderbeck in the fifth made it 9-5, while a fielder's choice off the bat of Carter Bumgardner where Holy Cross pitcher John Colella tried to get Justin Meier at home plated the other run, just before the second delay.

Freshman lefty Xavier Hammond entered the game in the sixth inning for Bucknell and faced four hitters in the sixth and retired the side in order in the seventh and ninth. However, the Crusaders loaded the bases against him with one out in the eighth. He got Mike Ahmed to fly out to center, and it appeared as though he got out of the inning, but a chopper back to the mound went off his glove. Reserve shortstop Greg Wasikowski fielded it and his throw to first was wild and two runs ended up scoring on the play, making it 11-6.

Colella, who picked up his sixth save of the year by pitching the final 4.2 innings, allowed just one hit to the Bison until the ninth when a Vanderbeck single up the middle scored Rob Krentzman, who led off the frame with a walk.

Donato, Bumgardner, Krentzman and Vanderbeck had two hits apiece in game two, while Meier was a team-best 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.

Dan Goldstein (0-2) was unable to get out of the first inning as he was tagged with the loss. Russell Seidell and Alex Cillo also made appearances on the mound for the Bison.

Holy Cross left 13 runners on base in game two, while Bucknell left 14 runners on.

Holy Cross starter Nate Koneski (2-2) was the story of game one. He pitched a complete game five-hitter, with three of those hits coming in the fourth inning when Bucknell scored its only run of the contest. The left-hander struck out six, walked just one and retired the final eight hitters he faced. Thanks to a double play, he faced the minimum number of hitters (11) over his final 3.2 innings.

Bucknell was forced to use four pitchers in game one. Starter Ryan Ebner (2-4) pitched 1.1 innings and yielded two hits and two runs to go along with four walks. Marcus Garone relieved him and got Maldanado to ground into a double play to end the second, but the Crusaders touched him for two runs in the third on a Cipolla double and one more in the fourth on a Maldanado single.

Matt Lamore (2.1 IP) and Jordan Holtz (1.0 IP) allowed just one hit and four walks over the final 3.1 innings, holding Holy Cross without a run during their time on the mound.

Bucknell's run in game one came in the fourth when it capitalized on a leadoff double by Bumgardner. Clark followed with a hard single through the right side, driving home the designated hitter from third after a balk. Gerry Runyan singled and Scott Reed walked to load the bases, but Koneski got Robb Scott and Seidell out to end the frame.

Donato saw his 21-game hitting streak come to an end with an 0-for-3 performance in game one. The contest ended two batters away from him receiving a fourth at bat. However, the senior started a new streak with two hits in game two. He is hit .414 on the year and now ranks seventh in program history with 187 hits in his career.

Bucknell's bullpen had a solid 5.02 ERA on Sunday as it was used for 14.1 of the 16.0 innings in the doubleheader. On Saturday, the Bison starters pitched 15.0 of the 16.0 innings.

The 4-5-6 hitters in the lineup for the Bison - Clark, Runyan, Reed in game one and Clark, Runyan, Krentzman in game two - were a combined 8-for-22 in the doubleheader. Overall, the Bison recorded 19 hits in the two contests. Runyan has now hit in a team-high six consecutive games.

Bucknell will wrap up its seven-game homestand Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. non-league contest against Lock Haven. The Bison will then head on the road Wednesday to play a 6 p.m. game at Maryland.
