In my previous blog entry, I talked about broadcasters and content providers discovering new telecom solutions to deliver their product to as many consumers as possible. Now, I want to tell you about another innovation taking hold in Europe and predictions for the future of the technology, media, and telecommunications industries. My colleagues at TERALINK and I uncovered all this information during a workshop we recently held for key players in TV.

I discussed previously how over-the-top (OTT) content is actually something telcos can embrace. Thierry Abraham, Chief Technology Officer for FTA Communication Technologies, said that along with Over-The-Top services, media companies will also need to shift to Hybrid Broadband TV (HbbTV). A drop for Russow, who weighed in at 246 lbs. for UFC 147, may be a bit more difficult than for Nelson. In addition to being a pro fighter, he is a full-time officer in the Chicago Police Department. He doesn't train full-time, like Nelson does.

Michael Hughes Death Sentence: 'Southside Slayer' Gets Is Sentenced To Death For 3 Murders

LOS ANGELES -- A convicted serial killer was given a death sentence Friday for strangling a 15-year-old girl and two women in the Los Angeles "Southside Slayer" attacks of the 1980s and 1990s, according to prosecutors.

Michael Hughes, 55, was convicted last November of killing his victims after DNA evidence tied him to murders authorities say were committed for sexual gratification.

Hughes was convicted of killing 15-year-old Yvonne Coleman, 36-year-old Verna Williams and 32-year-old Deborah Jackson between 1986 and 1993. Williams and Jackson were prostitutes.

His victims were strangled and some of their nude bodies were posed for discovery with their legs spread in order to shock whoever found them, prosecutors said.

Hughes already is serving a life sentence for killing four other women.

He was convicted in the 1992 murders of Theresa Ballard, 27, and Brenda Bradley, 37, who was the niece of the former mayor; and the 1993 killings of Terri Myles, 33, and Jamie Harrington.

Hughes, a former security guard, was investigated by a task force looking into the killings of dozens of women in the 1980s and 1990s by the so-called "Southside Slayer."

Police later concluded at least three serial killers, including Hughes, were stalking women during a crack cocaine epidemic that led some women onto the streets as prostitutes in order to support their habits.

Pizza deliveryman Chester Turner was convicted in 2007 and sentenced to death for killing 10 women, one of them pregnant, in the 1980s and `90s. He has been charged with four additional killings and ordered to stand trial.

Investigators also arrested Lonnie Franklin Jr., a South Los Angeles mechanic, last year as part of the "Grim Sleeper" slayings. He has pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of murder and one attempted murder charge.

Prosecutors suspect Franklin shot or strangled 10 women and girls between 1985 and 2007, dumping their bodies in alleys near his home.

Chinese Astronauts Accomplish First Manual Docking

Chinese astronauts in the?Shenzhou 9 spacecraft?successfully made their first manual docking with space station Tiangong-1 on Sunday at around 04:00 GMT. Previously, China had accomplished only automated docking.

Shenzhou 9 is a manned spacecraft launched on 16 June 2012.?It is carrying three astronauts: Jing Haipeng, Liu Wang and China's first woman astronaut?Liu Yang.?The astronauts' team is led by Jing Haipeng, 46, who has already visited the Tiangong 1 space lab in 2008.

Chinese scientists claim that the first automatic docking with the Tiangong-1 took place on 18 June.

Chinese national television broadcast images of Jing Haipeng, Liu Wang and Liu Yang, smiling after completing the exercise, according to a?BBC?report.

The astronauts are reportedly celebrating the success of their mission with some Chinese delicacy. ?

Just half hour before the spacecraft could dock with the Tiangong-1, Shenzhou-9 parted from the Tiangong-1 to a berth point 400 metres away from the space lab. To leave room for adjustment, astronomers set up three berth points for the spaceship on the same orbit, according to?Xinhuanet, a Chinese news journal.

The first berth was 400 metres away from the space lab; the second berth point was 140 metres away and the third berth point 30 metres and finally the dock with the space lab.

Chinese scientists say it is a great achievement for China because manual docking technique is hard to master as it involves two vessels - placed in the same orbit and revolving around earth at thousands of kilometres (miles) per hour - coming together very gently to avoid destroying each other, according to AFP.

It is a very important mission, as it requires a lot of skills and techniques to manually dock with the space station. The world's first docking of two spacecraft was accomplished on 16 March, 1966, when?Gemini 8 rendezvoused and docked with an unmanned?Agena Target Vehicle.

"Compared with automatic docking, manual docking is more challenging in terms of orbit control," AFP quoted Xie Jianfeng, a scientist at the Beijing Aerospace Control Centre, as saying.

Apart from the manual docking, China has taken another major step by sending the first Chinese woman into space.

Now, scientists believe that China has completely grasped space rendezvous and docking technologies and the country is fully capable of transporting humans and cargo to an orbiter in space, which is essential for building a space station in 2020, according to Xinhuanet.

Fewer US CEOs plan to hire, boost spending

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A survey of chief executives shows fewer large U.S. companies plan to hire or boost spending in the next six months, reflecting a weaker U.S. economy.

The Business Roundtable says 36 percent of its CEO members plan to add workers over the next six months. That's down from 42 percent when the survey was last taken three months ago.

Jim McNerney, the group's chairman and CEO of The Boeing Co., blamed the dip in sentiment on "concern over increasingly persistent obstacles to a stronger recovery." Those include uncertainty over potential U.S. tax increases and spending cuts early next year and Europe's financial crisis.

Only 43 percent say they plan to step up spending on machinery, computers and other large goods, down from 48 percent. Most CEOs still expect sales to increase in the next six months.

Overall, the CEO Outlook survey index fell to 89.1 in the second quarter, down from 96.9 in the first three months of the year. Any reading above 50 indicates growth.

The gloomier outlook follows a sharp pullback in hiring over the past two months, which has raised concerns that the economy is slumping after a fast start. Job growth averaged only 73,000 in April and May, after average gains of 226,000 per month in the first three months of the year. The unemployment rate rose to 8.2 percent in May from 8.1 percent.

McNerney said that companies are delaying hiring, and even laying off workers, in anticipation of what many economists call the "fiscal cliff" that looms at the end of this year. Several large tax cuts are scheduled to expire and big spending cuts, including in defense, are set to take effect Jan. 1.

While President Barack Obama and lawmakers say they will delay the onset of the changes, McNerney said companies can't be sure. Last year, Congress and the White House agreed only at the last minute to raise the government's borrowing limit and stave off a possible default.

"We have yet to regain faith that the process will deal with it," McNerney said.

As a result, "we don't know how corporations, or individuals, or capital will be taxed," he said. "That is having an impact on the results you see here."

Boeing and many other aerospace companies with government contracts are holding back on hiring and are cutting jobs in anticipation of the spending cuts, he added.

The Business Roundtable represents the CEOs of the 200 largest U.S. corporations. The survey is based on 164 responses received between May 17 and June 8.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) ? Star receiver Percy Harvin wants out of Minnesota.

One day after Harvin expressed frustration over several unspecified issues with the Vikings, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Harvin had requested a trade. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Harvin voiced frustration with the Vikings on Tuesday at the first day of mandatory minicamp. He did not say what his specific issues were with the team, only saying that he was unhappy with several things and wanted them addressed before training camp begins at the end of July.

"I just put it this way: There's a lot of different things that have to be sorted out," Harvin said Tuesday. "Just haven't been really happy lately. We've got a couple of things to work on. I'm here in the classroom. We'll go from there."

Harvin attended the team's morning practice Wednesday, leaving the field before reporters could ask any questions. Running back Adrian Peterson said he hadn't spoken to his friend about it but planned to have a conversation to try to help smooth things over.

"I wouldn't say it's distracting. It's more bothering. It's like, we definitely don't want to lose this guy. ... I'm sure the organization will do what it has to do to keep this guy around," Peterson said. "If it was me, I would make sure that we kept him around. But we'll see."

Given Harvin's status as a 24-year-old rising star and one of the team's top players, the request is unlikely to be granted. Coach Leslie Frazier said Tuesday that he was confident any issues Harvin had could be resolved well before training camp.

"I really feel like when he and I sit down and talk in depth," Frazier said, "whatever is in his heart or on his mind, we'll get through it."

Harvin, who is still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, worked out with the team during an afternoon practice Tuesday and said later in the day that he did not want to be a distraction and only wanted to talk about football issues.

He has two years left on his rookie contract, but it was not immediately clear how much that had to do with his displeasure, if at all. The Vikings are coming off of consecutive last-place finishes in the NFC North and have entered a rebuilding phase centered on Harvin, Peterson, who is recovering from a torn ACL, and second-year quarterback Christian Ponder.

Harvin was the team's first-round draft pick in 2009 and has quickly emerged as the Vikings' most versatile and dynamic player. He is the team's only proven commodity at receiver heading into his fourth season and is coming off a year in which he posted career highs in receptions (87), yards (967) and total touchdowns (9).

Harvin has shown the ability to play in the slot as an inside receiver and on the perimeter as a deep threat and has become one of the most dangerous kick returners in the league. He also rushed for 345 yards last season, helping to spell Peterson in the run game.

Migraine headaches and a few other bumps and bruises from Harvin's physical and punishing style of play led to some concerns about his durability, especially in his first two seasons. But Harvin played in all 16 games last year while fighting a painful rib injury and became a respected veteran in the locker room.

Requesting a trade now would be a curious move if he does want a new contract, with the normal protocol for similar situations being to hold out from training camp to spur negotiations.

Earlier this offseason, Harvin pledged to be a team leader and showed up at several voluntary practices despite still recovering from having bone chips removed from his shoulder. With a receiver group that includes rookie fourth-rounders Greg Childs and Jarius Wright and unproven veteran Jerome Simpson, who will be suspended for the first three games, Harvin is the only established game-breaker at the position for the Vikings.

"I'm going to be honest with you guys. I've been watching tape, but it's just working on things from last year," Harvin said when asked about the offense. "I'm into it, but like I said, I'm not happy with things, so I haven't really been in tune to (personnel) and stuff right now.

"Overall, just watching game film and breaking down quarterbacks, breaking down myself, defenses I may face that I faced last year, things like that."

His role in the offense could be an issue. Despite being used in a variety of roles last season, Harvin often found himself on the sideline in the red zone. The Vikings could be using more two tight end formations this year with the addition of pass-catching tight end John Carlson to go along with Kyle Rudolph.

Offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said he wasn't aware of any issues Harvin had with the offense and pledged to use him even more this season.

"We're looking forward to getting him on the field and as an offense we're looking forward to having a better year," Musgrave said. "That's the bottom line."
